Image of Christ in Hagia Sophia

Byzantine Art I selected the mosaic of Christ in the church called the Hagia Sophia. I chose this piece of artwork because I like the detail of the mosaic. Also, I chose this image of Christ because it is a very famous piece of artwork that has been around for ages. The detail in this icon is very impressive. This icon of Christ is found in the ancient Byzantine church the Hagia Sophia. It represents the Byzantine empire because it is a mosaic, and mosaics were very popular during this time. The Hagia Sophia one of the oldest church from the Byzantine Empire. This church was built in 537A.D. by the emperor Justinian. The Hagia Sophia is still around in the city of Constantinople. Inside the church, it contains many gold mosaics, liturgical furnishings, and expensive marbles. Although the date of this mosaic is unknown, scholars think that it is from around 1185-1204BC. Also, they think this mosaic was made by a group of people, not just an individual. Works Cited Atchison, Bob. "About Hagia Sophia." Hagia Sophia.
